Veterans Day is November 11 this fall, and Philadelphia’s Veterans Parade and Festival on the Parkway is this Sunday, November 8 - the perfect time to celebrate our neighborhood’s veterans and veteran-serving organizations.

The historic (celebrating their 80th year in 2026!) Parkway Memorial VFW Post 7650 at 757 N 24th Street is committed to supporting veterans of the U.S. armed services, their families, and their neighbors in Fairmount. Founded in 1946 with 65 charter members, the Post moved to 757 N 24th Street in 1949 and currently counts more than 250 full and social members, in addition to an auxiliary, and supports a range of community service efforts. It also hosts a variety of public and holiday events throughout the year, including on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and is available for event rentals.

The post’s roots date back to just after the Second World War when a group of young veterans organized to serve fellow-veterans living in the Fairmount neighborhood. On July 19, 1946, 65 veterans were sworn in, with Thomas Hart Sr. elected as commander. For two years, members conducted their meetings at a club located at 25th and Aspen St. and in 1949, Parkway Post purchased 757 N. 24th St. as their permanent home. On Memorial Day, 1992, they organized and installed the Ladies Auxiliary, led by President Irene Hagerty. Their added energies enabled the post to expand their activities and become more involved in the community.

While membership has fluctuated through the years, the post remains dedicated to serving the Fairmount community, currently under the leadership of Mike Hill, Commander since 2025 - pictured above at left with Air Force ROTC cadets this summer.
